| I started and presently coordinate Willinghands Volunteers, an online group of young people interested in humanitarian and volunteering activities. The purpose of Willinghands is to motivate and encourage young people in Nigeria and elsewhere towards making positive contribution to their community whilst realising their potentials through volunteering activities. In some countries of Africa, for instance Nigeria, young people regard volunteering as exclusive work for registered charities or some other such organisations that raises money for some "causes" and help in the community, or "something that adults or people with the extra cash" do. Willinghands aim to dispel this to encourage and inculcate the habit of volunteering in young people; to make them understand, practice and promote volunteering ideals in their respective local environments as a means of community development and self-actualization. In Nigeria, for instance, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) appears to be the only official means young people does some kind of what could be term volunteering. Established by the Federal Government, the National Youth Service Corps is a mandatory one-year social service programme that is limited to University and Polytechnic Graduates after the completion of a four or five year degree programme. This noble programme
however leaves out other categories of young people. This is a far cry
from what obtained in some other part of the world where young people
are especially motivated and encouraged to get involved in volunteering
activities whatever their age, gender, social or educational background. The Young people of
Willinghands aim to use this online platform to initiate varied ways
to direct other young people’s attention towards volunteering
in this part of the world, encourage them to get involve in volunteering
activities in whatever capacity or ways that will make use of their
natural talent, intelligence, and abilities, not only for their personal
development, but also for the general good of their local environment
and the world at large. If you want to know how
you can be part of Willinghands, please send an email to: Willinghands@gmail.com
